STEM: eSports and Gaming
February 22, 2025 - Decatur, Georgia – On this Saturday morning at a learning lab on the campus of Georgia Tech, boys and young men jumped into the dynamic industry of eSports and Gaming.
This unique outreach activity, which was assembled by Bro. Norman “Storm” Robinson III, PH.D., and his Omega Kappa Alpha Alpha Chapter brothers, was designed to engage each participant through the intersection of gaming and technology. Specifically, for everyone to learn more about the strategies and critical thinking skills that drive competitive gaming. Saturday’s learning started with multiplayer games, then broke off into two different games: 2K gaming, the current eSports challenge in Georgia, and League of Legions.
“If you truly enjoy gaming and have a passion for gaming - follow it - because you are more likely to be successful with it,” expressed Robinson, who has been influential and innovative in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as an education executive. Robinson pointed to a chart which reflected that the composition of gamers is 54% men, 44% females, along with other diversity factors in eSports. Robinson then stated that the experience of gaming, itself, improves one’s life skills such as problem-solving techniques and teamwork. And, as one learns how to achieve teamwork, he concurrently branches out and becomes more self-effacing while showing respect towards teammates, displaying appropriate behavior, and becoming a better communicator. Also, Robinson emphasized that, “a gamer will undergo and learn stress management, meaning that one will experience and perform at the apex and then must reenergize, thereby, it is a period of performance then recovery”.
eSports is gaining lots of traction and visibility in Georgia, Robinson further stated, especially in the top school district in Forsyth County, which shows gaming in these schools is very good and highly rewarded. And a shining example of recent rewards and a very helpful competitor at Saturday’s session, was Nathan Scott, who is the son of KAA Bro Robert Scott, and the 2024 Madden Play VS National Champion. Saturday was concluded with suggestions to these young men to return to their schools and become an advocate for themselves and start eSports clubs. According to Robinson, it is becoming more prevalent in schools with computer capability to build their own game servers. And, with these machine learning jobs, the average salary is $80,000 to $100,000 for starting jobs. However, one must constantly learn, enhance his competition thinking and listening, and earn certifications.
