YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAM

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. was the first African- American, international fraternal organization founded Nov. 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. From its inception, Omega Psi Phi has worked to build a community of high achieving, like minded men dedicated to its cardinal principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift.
With those four building blocks the KAA Chapter of Omega Psi Phi has developed a Manhood Uplift mentoring program name the Omega Knights

Mentoring Program Mission: To address the many challenges facing African- American males. This program is designed to inject an optimistic environment, attitude and message into the lives of middle school through high school males, by teaching and encouraging them to positively define, plan, pursue and achieve their life goals. To encourage high achievement and expose mentees to new experiences.
Programs Vision:To build Knowledgeable, Noble, Individuals, Geared, Heavily Towards Success.
Overview:Annually, Our mentoring service includes:
(a) Academic enrichment symposiums, including college & careers workshops, college campus tours:
(b) Community service, blood drives, supporting elementary school tutoring programs, senior citizens programs, and DeKalb Clean and Beautiful projects;
(c) Social and recreational outings including but not limited to such events as Family Day Cookouts, Martin Luther King Day Parade, Hosea Feed the Homeless Drive, Supporting the 5K Runs on the fight on Cancer
(d) Cultural & fellowship Outing: Black history tours, museum tours; scientific, historical, artistic, and sport exhibits. Black College Football games, and Basketball Games; and
(e) Financial responsibility workshops; establishing saving accounts and teaching how to budget
Note: Plans are in place for career visibility and development outings: Visiting Black Entrepreneurs within the KAA Chapter; to expose mentees to self-development and ownership.
Our Formal Program runs between August and June which matches the school year calendar, but KAA Omega Chapter Mentor’s remain engaged with programs participants during the summer with recreational activities to include softball games with mentees, bowling, and fishing.
Note: Plans in place to establish manhood, uplift, and perseverance skill sets:
a. Learning to change oil in cars
b. Fixing flat tires, Do tire rotations
c. How to use lawn equipment
d. Participating in Voters Register drive campaign
Founding Principles: Nobility, Outreach, Brotherhood, Leadership, Education
Using these founding principle, participants in the Omega Knight Program benefit by experiencing personal development essential to their long-term success. Mentees will develop academically, socially and emotionally. They will mature through various support services and exposure to positive experiences that will rereinforce critical life skills. They will build confidence necessary to visualize, believe and pursue their dreams, by the involvement and fellowship with likeminded young men.
Topics Covered Using the Founding Principles:
a. Nobility: Communication Skills, Career Development, Financial Literacy
b. Outreach: Developing Positive Relationship, Mentoring others, Community service
c. Brotherhood: Leadership upon Peers, Importance of Family relationship, Importance of dating/Relationships
d. Leadership: Self Identity, Self Esteem, Self Assessment, Being a Influencer
e. Education: Health & Well Being, Computer Science, Proper Use of Social Media, Scholarship
Note: As Scholarship is a cardinal principle of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, our mentoring program automatically enrolls the participants in our Scholarship Award Program. Our Big Brother/Little Brother Mentoring process will ensure each participant will be able to apply for these scholarships in their senior year of high school. These scholarships are awarded to any graduating senior who completes the required criteria for the scholarship.
Requirement to enroll in the Mentoring Program
1. Must be a Middle School – High School Male
2. Must stay engaged in 80% of the activities of the program
a. There will be mandatory events that will be required
b. Any excusable absents from a program event must be given to the mentor in advance.
3. Must learn the basic core values of the Program
a. Creed = will be said before very meeting and at the end of each meeting
b. Learn the meaning of Omega Knights
c. Learn the founding principles
d. Follow the dress code of the Omega Knights
4. Be able to know and build relationships with each co- knight in the program
OPEN ENROLLMENT
1. Every year in August
2. Official induction into the Omega Knights Program will be in May during the Mother’s & Son Day Luncheon
Note: All requirements (above) must be met in order to be inducted into the program.
Schedule And Programing event Calendar
1. There will be at least one event monthly
2. Core Value Saturdays (will be announced in advance)
a. These meeting are mandatory
b. Team Building
c. Career Development
d. Core value training
e. Leadership skills
Note: these Saturday mandatory meetings are not limited to the above items
Parental Involvement
1. Provide transportation to and from the events
2. Develop a parent network using email and phone to ensure the success of every mentee
3. Provide feedback to the program through the email access and logging onto the survey link
4. Reinforce positive attitude towards the program
5. Be involved in the parenting sessions during certain events
6. Be involved in some of the session with your son
7. Provide feedback to the Mentor of behavior or any pattern of concern about your son
8. Learn the job description of the Mentor’s role to your son life
9. Sign off on all forms, permission list , etc… as it pertains to program
